On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, Vernell Jones Jr. (affectionately known as "Rock" and "Junnie"), 62, passed away at VCU Health Center.
Vernell Jr. was the first son born to the union of the late Vernell Sr. and Thelma Jones on December 30, 1960, in Richmond, VA. In addition to his parents, he is greeted in heaven by his brother Mario Jones, and nephew, DeVon Jones.
One of Rock's greatest sources of love and companionship was his marriage to Natalie on August 7, 2020. He accepted Christ and joined the Morning Star Baptist Church at an early age. Rock was a graduate of the Class of 1979 and attended Norfolk State University. Junnie "Rocked" to his own beat which may explain why he made history as the "First Drum Major" of the Surry County High School Marching Band in 1975. He was employed with Huntington Ingalls for over 35 years as a shipfitter.
Junnie was a jokester who had the gift of bringing joy to others through laughter. He enjoyed talking with the elderly and giving a few dollars to the younger kids. He loved the game of football, always displaying his love for the 2023 NFC Champs Philadelphia Eagles. His charm and endearing smile will be fondly remembered.
Memories of Junnie will always be cherished by his loving wife, Natalie Brown Jones, his dedicated son Jarrell Clanton and his bonus daughter Natascha Davis; Papa Rock's grandbabies Keaton and Ethan Davis; sisters Sheila Allen (Eddie), Deborah Flowers (Michael), Vanessa Howell (Alonzo); brother Lamont Jones; loving nieces and nephews KaVonia Jones, ShaVonne Jones, Ashlie Jones, Christopher Allen, Joy Jones, Tatyana Jones, and Joshua Jones; great nieces Arin and Autumn Roney: aunts Rebecca Shaw, Ennie Shaw, Mildred Ellis Boothe, and Dorothy Hill; brothers-in-law Brian Brown, Carl (Audrey) Brown and William (Joyce) Brown. Special recognition of his Club 79 crew & lifelong friends; Darryl Jones, Kenneth White, Shelfer Peace, Keith Johnson, Charlie Ellis, James Watkins Jr., and Howard Jones.
A walk-through viewing will be held at Peace Funeral Home, 237 Railroad Avenue Waverly Virginia, Tuesday 10:00am until 7 P.M. and you may view one hour prior to Wednesday's services.
A Celebration of Life Services will be held at 12:30 P.M., Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Morning Star Baptist Church, 19121 Brandon Road, Spring Grove, VA, the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Elliott, Jr., Pastor, eulogist. The interment will follow at the Morning Star Baptist Church Cemetery.
