Obituary

Susan Pope Irving, 72, of Waverly, Virginia passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2024, in Bon Air, VA. Susan was a lifelong resident of Waverly. She was born on September 25, 1951, to the late Leverette Early Pope and Eloise Freeman Pope, also of Waverly.

Susan loved the Waverly community. She helped her father run his longtime grocery store here until it closed in 1987. She served 17 years in the Waverly Rescue Squad, taught Sunday school for years at Waverly Baptist Church, and led or volunteered for innumerable community events, fundraisers, and disaster relief drives. She was Mayor of Waverly from 2000-2010. She was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband Frank, sons Greg and Matt, stepdaughter Mandy (Glenn) and stepson Mark (Courtney), as well as eight wonderful grandchildren. She was loved for her incredible work ethic, her generosity, and the strength she showed in battling cancer these last seven years.

The family will hold a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Waverly United Methodist Church, 138 Coppahaunk Ave, Waverly, VA. Refreshments and a celebration of Susan's life will follow in the church's Fellowship Hall.
