Obituary

Ruby Josephine Holmes was born September 2, 1931, and peacefully passed away on April 1, 2025. She was the youngest of eight children born to Cora Lee Spratley and Joseph Holmes. During her earlier years, she lived with her family in Southampton and Surry counties while her father made a living farming, sharecropping, and working at a mill. In the early 1950s, Ruby moved with her family to Wakefield, Virginia. She was the last child living at home and took care of Cora and Joseph before their passing in 1957 and 1958, respectively.

Ruby and most of her family joined Ebenezer Baptist Church many decades ago. Her parents were some of the earliest members of the Church. Her parents and several siblings are buried there. She served as the Secretary of the Sunday School, and she supported the Missionary and Women's ministry.  She also sang in the choir and enjoyed fellowshipping with church members. She was active in the Church until her illness and passing.

Ruby lived most of her adult life in Wakefield. She was active in the community. She supported the PTA and sang at several community events. She worked at the Columbian Peanut Company until it closed. While working at the Summit Bark plant in Waverly, she was one of the company's employees of the quarter. She later worked at the Virginia Diner's factory, which produced and packaged candies and nuts. Ruby was very independent-minded and strong-willed. On any given day it was common to see her walking "all over town" to visit friends or to take care of business. At the age of ninety-three, she continued to live by herself until her illness overcame her four weeks prior to her death.

Ruby was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Ann Thomas (Brooklyn, New York), and all her siblings: Ida Mae, Cora Lee, Georgia Bea, Lottie, Willie, Eleanor Hawkins, and Daniel Leroy Holmes (died in the Korean War). She leaves to mourn her son, Linwood Daniel Jones (Janice), and grandson, Daniel Jones, both of McDonough, Georgia, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
