Mario Cline Newby Sr. was born on November 30, 1952, in Elberon, VA to the late Curtis Newby Sr. and Mary Velma Newby. Mario was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at VCU Medical Center Main Hospital.

Mario accepted Christ at an early age and joined Cypress Baptist Church. He was educated in the Surry County Public School System and graduated from Luther Porter Jackson High School, with the class of 1971. Prior to entering the workforce, Mario enlisted in the United States Army, completed one tour, and 18 years in the Army Reserves.  He later began working at the Surry County Parks and Recreation Facility as the Athletic Coordinator.

After leaving Parks and Recreation, Mario began his career at the Sussex II State Prison in Waverly, VA. He worked here until his retirement.

Mario was easy-going and slow to anger. He believed in taking care of his loved ones and never wanted them to worry about him. This was true even through his own illness. He was an avid golfer and would not miss an opportunity to play in a tournament no matter how far away. When he was not playing golf you could find Mario watching the Indianapolis Colts or New York Yankees games.

Mario was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Mary Newby, one sister Joan Newby and three brothers, Curtis Newby Jr., Dan Newby Sr., and Glenwood Newby. He leaves to cherish his memory two dedicated sons, Shernard C. Newby (Michelle) of Williamsburg, and Mario C. Newby Jr. of Petersburg, three grandsons, Shernard II, Shermar and Sherdari Newby of Williamsburg, one brother Steve Newby of Waverly, two aunts Phyllis Smith James and Harriet Ruffin, one uncle Warren W. Smith, two sisters-in-law Gloria Newby and Myrtle Jones and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

Funeral Service Honoring the Life of Mr. Newby will be 12Noon Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church 5738 Colonial Trail E, Surry, Virginia.  Interment will follow at Cypress Baptist Church Cemetery 849 Runny Meade Road Elberon, Virginia.
