On November 20, 2025, a beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Aunt entered eternal rest at Bon Secours Southside Medical Center in Petersburg, VA.
Mamie G. Turner was 96 years old. She was born on December 22, 1928, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Percy Garrett Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Mr. James Turner Sr.; two daughters, Betty Bates and Ethel Gwaltney; nine sons, McCoy Turner, Carlton Turner, Tyrone Turner, Robert K. Turner, James Turner Jr., Robert L. Turner, Walter Turner, Joe L. Garrett, and Aaron Turner; one granddaughter, Felcia Garrett; one grandson, Larry Turner; one son-in-law, Sidney Gwaltney; four sisters, Bessie G. Evans, Lucy Whitaker, Lula Mae Thomas, and Carrie B. Dennis; four brothers, Percy Garrett, Joe Garrett, Bob Garrett, and Richard Garrett; one sister-in-law, Rosa B. Garrett; and one brother-in-law, Garfield Dennis.
Mamie G. Turner resided at 612 West Main St., Waverly, Virginia, where she shared a loving home with her devoted daughter, Zulean Ruffin. She found joy in the simple, precious moments of life. Nothing made her happier than seeing her family come together; those gatherings filled her heart, and her beautiful smile could brighten any room she walked into. She loved listening to music and dancing, letting the rhythm lift her spirit. One of her favorite pastimes was sitting peacefully on the porch, watching the cars pass by and enjoying the world around her. These quiet moments brought her comfort and peace, reflecting the gentle soul she was.
Mamie G. Turner was a shining example of grace, strength, and love. She lived a long and meaningful life, touching the hearts of everyone blessed to know her. She is lovingly remembered by her devoted daughter, Zulean Ruffin, and her granddaughter and caretaker, Tanika Turner, whose constant love and compassion surrounded her every day. She cherished all her grandchildren deeply. Their presence brought joy to her heart, and her face would light up the moment they walked into the room. Each one held a special place in her life, and she carried that love with her always.
As the beloved elder of the family, her gentle spirit and quiet wisdom reached every generation she leaves behind. She had a calm, steady presence someone whose warmth, kindness, and soft strength made everyone feel seen and loved. Her legacy is one of love, faith, and resilience. Though she will be deeply missed, the memories she created and the love she shared will continue to live on in the hearts of her family. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her spirit will forever remain a guiding light to all who loved her.
Mamie G. Turner leaves to cherish her memories her nine devoted children: Janice T. Jones (Mack) and Zulean Ruffin (Melvin), both of Waverly, Virginia; Gloria Johnson of Petersburg, Virginia; Laverne Turner of Richmond, Virginia; Ernest Turner (Gladys), Leon Turner (Tasha), and Herbert Turner, all of Waverly, Virginia; Junius Turner and Leroy Turner, both of Richmond, Virginia; Oscar Turner of Lawrenceville, Virginia; one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Turner of Emporia, Virginia; and one devoted niece, Susie G. Thomas.
She also leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, November 29, 2025 at Peace Funeral Home 237 Railroad Avenue, Waverly, Virginia, Pastor Willie Thomas, Eulogist. Interment will follow at Waverly Cemetery, Spring Branch Road, Waverly, Virginia .
