Obituary

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing."  II Timothy‬ ‭4‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

On Sunday, February 15, 2026, Leonard Lee Rogers, affectionately known as "Moose" transitioned from this earthly home at Waverly Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center to be with the Lord.

He was born January 8, 1943, in Waverly, Virginia, to the late Stephen Rogers and Lovely Hatchett Rogers.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Purcell Rogers, Stephen Rogers Jr., and Clinton Rogers Sr.; sisters, Lovely Epps, Esther Barrow, Bernice Brown, and Victoria Charity.

Leonard had a basic education and began working as a young man at Gray Lumber Company in Waverly, Virginia.  He worked on the saw mill yard and was a hard worker! Leonard took great pride in being a manual laborer, and there were few men who could outwork him!  His time with Gray Lumber Company continued for 20 years.  The mill was sold, and it later became Evans Lumber Company. Leonard continued working there until retirement age.

Leonard was a gentle soul who loved the Lord.  He began his Sunday mornings with attendance in Sunday School at First Baptist Church, and then he walked by the railroad tracks to travel to Liberty Baptist Church for regular Church Service.

Leonard was a people person; he just loved being around people for the conversations about the Lord, Church Service, football (Dem Cowboys), Waverly Happenings, and a good Herring Fish Breakfast. He also enjoyed watching his Westerns: Gunsmoke, Bonanza, and The Rifleman while drinking coffee anytime of the day!

Leonard was civic-minded and was a registered voter and he was serious about casting his vote. He tried to remain current with the news for the Town of Waverly, Sussex County and the Nation.

He leaves to treasure his fond memories two devoted nieces and caregivers, Sarah O. Mason (John) and Gwendolyn Davis; nieces, Kimberly Rogers, Phyllis Dobie, and Adriene Hines (James); nephews, Clinton Rogers Jr. (Dawn) and Steve Barrow (Sharon); devoted great-nephews, Garland N. Charity (Lisa) and Adrian L. Oglesby; one sister-in-law, Louise B. Rogers; and a host of great nieces and great nephews; devoted friends Robert Johnson, Reverend Marian Johnson, William Ricks, and the Butler Street Neighbors; Bobby and Cora Lee Baines and Sheriff Ernest Giles.
