Lawrence
Harrison
April 14, 1939 – October 30, 2020
Lawrence "Flap" Harrison, Jr., 81 of Petersburg formerly of Waverly has joined his beloved Shirley in paradise. On October 30, 2020, Lawrence transitioned while in rehab at the Dinwiddie Health & Rehab Center.
Lawrence was born on April 14, 1939, in Waverly, VA to Lawrence Johnson and Lula Mae Harrison. He attended Sussex County Training School. Lawrence met and married the love of his life Shirley Butts on April 14, 1962. He worked at Masonite until his health began to fail. Lawrence was a former member of the Waverly Young Men Social Club and a member of Masonic Lodge #70. He served several years as a scout leader with big brother Earl and sister Izetta. He loved his Washington Redskins, Baltimore Orioles, and the Waverly Warrior baseball team.
Lawrence and Earl were inseparable. So close that when Lawrence started dating the middle Butts sister he introduced big brother Earl to the youngest Butts sister. Lawrence was known as "Flap" to his Goose Alley friends. He often told stories about his time with the ''Alley boys'' Joe Knot and his brothers, Walter, Peter and so many more. Lawrence loved his Stacy Adams shoes he wore them no matter how much his feet hurt. While in rehab Robyn purchased him a pair of $10 sneakers he told her they were the most comfortable shoes he's ever worn. He liked them so much he asked for another pair. Lawrence had a sense of humor. He earned the nickname ''Big Popa'' at a family gathering because of his jokes. Lawrence loved his family and friends. The last 49 days of Lawrence's life was filled with peaks and valleys. Two of those peaks were when his childhood friend Peter Jackson called him and when his "boy" Kevin came down from Maryland to give him a haircut and shave.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife Shirley V. Butts Harrison; his parents; and siblings, Earl Lee, Izetta, and Naomi.
Left to cherish his memories: daughters Robyn "Ruby" Spencer, Deneen Moore, Michelle, and Christa Harrison all of Petersburg; son Tashan Harrison of Petersburg; Diane Roberts (Anton) of Spring Grove and Kevin Harrison (Jermel) of Baltimore who he loved and raised as his own children; eight grandkids Keoyoko (Jermaine), Dena, April, Janda, Dakota, Jonae, Cordell and Diamond all of Petersburg; eight great-grandkids, Justin, Jonathan, Jessica, Rylee, Kennadie, Jaidyn, Ayden and Cayleb all of Petersburg; one great-great-granddaughter Kam of Petersburg. A host of other relatives, friends, and a devoted niece Loretta Luster.
