Obituary

Laverne Davis Turner peacefully entered eternal rest on Thursday, April 30, 2020, at 12:59 pm.  She was the daughter of the late Floyd and Lottie Davis.  She was raised in Wakefield, Virginia.  LaVerne received her formal education from Sussex County Training School.  After graduating high school, she attended and graduated from North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC with a bachelor's degree.  She was a proud "Aggie" and enjoyed meeting new generation "Aggies."

At an early age, LaVerne was baptized and joined First Baptist Church, Wakefield.  As a youth, she faithfully attended Church and Sunday School and served as Sunday School Secretary.  Later she worked as Church Clerk, Youth Coordinator, and in charge of the Youth Choir.  In transitioning to find a new church home, LaVerne faithfully attended Pocahontas Baptist Church and New Birth Ministries, both of Wakefield.  LaVerne also attended Springfield Baptist, Sutherland, Virginia where she was known as "The Queen."  After moving to Petersburg to be closer to her family, she joined Higher Way Ministries, Petersburg, Virginia where she faithfully attended until her decline in health.

While in college, during the summer months, LaVerne would work in New York City.  The summer after graduating from college, she worked in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and got "sand in her shoes."  Her favorite cousin "Billy" joined her and she made Atlantic City her home for ten years. There she met and married the late Edward M. Turner.

She returned to Wakefield to take care of her elderly mother and began teaching at Surry County Public Schools.  After 20 years of teaching Social Studies, World History, English, and French, she retired.  Later she worked at Ann's Dress Shop in Waverly, Virginia, and C&W Associates, Fort Lee, Virginia.  After full retirement, she dedicated her time to her grandchildren and great-granddaughter, they fondly called her "Bun Bun".

LaVerne always had a sense of fashion and was a diva in her own rights.  She loved to talk and no one was a stranger.  It would bring her great joy to see a former student and to hear them say, "Hi Miss Turner".

She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Iris-LaTonia Mathews; one granddaughter, Danielle McDaniel; one grandson, Darius Mathews; one great-granddaughter, Daniyah Coles; a god-sister, Veronica Spencer(Jesse); three step-granddaughters, Shenay Mathews, Candace Mathews, and Carissa Davis; a special god-son, Leroy Lewis, who made her smile in her last days and a host of cousins and friends.  Her lifelong friends were: Gracie Thornton, Gwendolyn Brown, Mae and Dennis Mason, and Caroline and Keith Jones, who faithfully visited her after she moved to Petersburg.

The family would like to thank Dr. Samantha Taylor and the Jen Care Staff of Colonial Heights, Virginia for their care, patience, and concern as well as the Kindred Hospice Team.  A special thank you to her granddaughter, Danielle McDaniel, who was her personal care provider for six years.
