An angel stopped by VCU Medical Center on Friday morning, October 7, 2016, and silenced the voice of our beloved wife, sister, auntie, cousin, and friend. Kaye S. Payne Worrell was a woman of great faith and not one to complain. She fought the good fight and quietly and peacefully surrendered to the will of God when the battle was over.
Kaye S. Payne Worrell was born August 18, 1952, in Pittsylvania County to the late Joseph and Erma Mae Payne. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry and Connie, and her step-mother, Luzetta Payne.
Kaye professed her faith and was baptized at the New Design Baptist Church at an early age. She was a faithful member of the Liberty Baptist Church and served as a Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Usher Board, Nurses Aide Committee, and the Women's Committee. Whatever she was a part of, Kaye always gave her all.
Kaye leaves to cherish her memory the love of her life, her devoted husband Cleveland, of the home. In addition to being a loving and faithful wife, Kaye was a caring, faithful, and supportive sister to Archie (Carrie) Payne, Michael (Linda) Payne, Lynn (Trish) Payne, and Sharol Genice Burton; as well as her step-sister, Priscilla Hairston, and her sisters-in-law, Sylvia Payne and Marjorie Urquhart. Auntie Kaye loved her nieces and nephews and was God mother to all of them: Twyla, Joey, Lywanda, Lynnette, Dion, Lavell, Latala, Korica, Jordan, Eddie, Jr., Michelle, and Ronnell Jay. Kaye is also survived by two aunts, Mattie Swanson and Inez Parchment, along with a host of great-nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Kaye graduated from Carver High School in Fieldale, Virginia in 1970. She attended Richard Bland College/ Southside Regional and earned her Bachelor's degree and the designation of Registered Nurse. Kaye went on to earn her Master's Degree from Hampton University. Throughout her career she was employed with numerous hospitals, and worked at Central State Hospital until her health declined. Kaye loved people, loved to talk, and never met a stranger; which made her job as a nurse a breeze.
Kaye served as a member of the Waverly Town Council and was a member of the Waverly Improvement Association. She also shared her knowledge of medicine and love of writing with her community by writing medical columns for the Sussex Surry Dispatch for a short term.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at 1:00 PM, at the Liberty Baptist Church, with the Rev. Karl Marshall officiating. Internment will follow at the Waverly Cemetery.
