Obituary

Mr. James Lee Woodley, 83 was born December 31, 1930 in Waverly, Virginia to the late George Woodley and Pearlie Jones Barrow. He attended Sussex County Training School and later moved to the Harlem District of the borough of Manhattan in New York City where he resided for 63 years. He retired from Bellevue Hospital Center's Environmental Services Department after 37 years of service.

He was married to the late Mrs. Josephine Woodley Parham, and was preceded in death by two children, Stephen Woodley and Ella Woodley Adkins; brother, Carl Barrow; and sister, Rosa Lee Hamlin. On April 14, 1996 he joined the Union Baptist Church, Spring Grove, Virginia, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Robert L. Elliott Jr. While in New York, he became a member of the 144th street family also known as the "BLOCK", where he and his children spent countless times enjoying the people of the community. He also was affiliated with the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of New York City. James Lee, as he was called, was an avid baseball player and fan being one of the original "Waverly Wildcats."

He is survived by four daughters; Gloria Shaw (Roger) of Spring Grove, Virginia; Hazel Hill, Mabel Hill both of Waverly, Virginia and Ruth Randolph of South Hill, Virginia; five sons; Joseph Woodley (Edith) of Hopewell, Virginia; Reverend Jerry Parham, Robin Parham (Annie), Piolet Parham(Victoria) and Norman Parham all of Waverly, Virginia; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Doreatha Ricks, Linda Jackson (James) of Waverly, Virginia, Mary Espita of New York, New York, and Caprina Johnson of Petersburg, Virginia; four brothers, James Barrow (Sarah), Walter (Jacqueline) both of Waverly, Virginia; Rudy Barrow (Connie) of Petersburg, Virginia and Lee Barrow Jr. (Mary) of Suitland, Maryland; one aunt, Blanche P. Jones of Waverly, Virginia; devoted friends Albertha Watson and her children of Queens, New York; three care-givers, Tyra Shaw of Petersburg, Virginia, Geraldine Parker of Waverly, Virginia and Latoya Billings of Richmond, Virginia. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins' relatives and friends. A special thanks to the 4West staff of Southside Regional Medical Center and Century Hospice.

The funeral service for Mr. Woodley will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Union Baptist Church, Spring Grove, Virginia, with the Rev. Antonio Meade, Pastor officiating and Rev. Jerry B. Parham eulogizing. Burial will be at the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Viewing for Mr. Woodley will be Friday, April 18, 2014 begin at noon and the family will receive friends from 5:00P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
