On Saturday, May 6, 2023, God in his infinite wisdom called home one of his faithful servants, Deacon Huddie McKinley Barnes (T-Boy). Huddie was born on November 6, 1937, to the late Benjamin Barnes Sr and Annie Mae Barnes in Sussex, County Virginia. At an early age, he joined Pleasant Grove, Littleton, Virginia but later moved his membership to Easter Baptist Church, Waverly Virginia. It was here he became a Deacon under the leadership of Rev. Dr. C.W. Robb. He also served as a Trustee.
Huddie has had a myriad of occupations. Mostly he was known for driving trucks. He has driven for Shultz Trucking and Higgins Lumber Company. For a short period, he also worked for Thomas Edmond's Logging Company. However, his main employer was Masonite/International Paper Company in Waverly, Virginia where he retired after 35 years. Most of all, Huddie loved to garden and grow vegetables for his family and his community.
Deacon Barnes was the oldest of Benjamin and Annie Mae's Children. He was proceeded in death by his parents and all his siblings: Vernell Bates, Benjamin Barnes Jr., Thelma Baines, and Sally Bennett. He was also proceeded by two children, Patricia, and Atlas.
Huddie leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Deaconess Mamie Saunders Barnes. Two sons, Dannie Barnes of Franklin, Virginia, and Charles Barnes of Waverly, Virginia. Five daughters, JoAnn Mason (Rufus) of Bronx, New York, Juanita Gay (Lorenzo) of Woodbridge, Virginia, Catherine Vaughan (Marvin) of Petersburg, Virginia, Theresa Barnes of Petersburg, Virginia, and Letitia Foster (Adrian) of Surry, Virginia. Nine grandchildren: Marquis Barnes Sr. (Tammy), Shunta Barnes, De'Rell Gay (Kenya), Terrandy Gay (Shanta), LaToya Blizzard (Juan), LaMarvis Barnes, Candice Ricks, Brittany Washington (Eric), and LaTiya Street. 19 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Among them one devoted and long-time friend Mr. J. Lafayette Edmond Sr.
Huddie will live in our hearts forever. He never met a stranger, and he was a friend to everyone and showed love to all.
A Celebration of Life will be 1:00pm Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Easter Baptist Church 13454 Jerusalem Plank Road, Waverly, Virginia, Rev. Joseph Williams, Pastor. Interment will follow at the Easter Baptist Church Cemetery.
Public Viewing will be 10:00am - 5:00pm Friday, May 12, 2023, at Peace Funeral Home 237 Railroad Avenue, Waverly, Virginia.
