Obituary

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

God in His infinite wisdom called His beloved child, Hope S. Pierce, from labor to reward on June 30, 2024. Hope was born to the late Jessie Evans Pierce and Robert Overton. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and sought His guidance by praying throughout her life.

Hope was educated in the Surry County Public School System. She was an alumnus of the graduating Class of 1985. While attending high school Hope played softball, participated in track & field, and the Cougar marching band.

Hope had a great love of service to others; she showed that love in her choice of employment. Her first job opportunity was given to her by her sister, a summer job at Burger King. Into adulthood, Hope chose to serve as a care provider in the mental health community at Phoenix N Peace Adult Care, Waverly, VA., maintaining employment for 15-plus years. Upon her passing she was employed with the Sussex County Public School System, continuing a heart of service to each individual that came into the cafeteria.

Providing for her family was a priority, a pleasure, and certainly came first. Her willingness to do for or because of her three sons had no limits. She adored them and would do any and everything she could to help them. Hope found tremendous joy in preparing a home-cooked meal for her family. Sunday meals required two meats to be prepared for dinner and her father and sons expected it. Cooking gave her a song in her heart. One of her many gifts was making sure everything was spotless.

She enjoyed cleaning and taking the time to make sure each item was in its proper place in the home. Hope was her father's care provider, seeing to his needs from day to day selflessly without complaints and with a loving touch. Her grandchildren provided her with a different type of love response that only required a "yes" answer. Because nothing melts the heart like being called "Grandma." That's what her grandchildren did for her, they gave her heart joy, laughter, and unconditional love.

Hope is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Burrell and Martha Evans, an infant son, her mother Jessie Evans Pierce, a sister Hylon Pierce, and two brothers Herman and Homer Pierce.

Hope's memory will be cherished by her father, Robert Overton of the home; three sons, Kevin Pierce of Chesapeake, VA., Steve Barrow of the home and Tavrin Pierce(Aaliyah); seven grandchildren, Tara'Jai Drewry-Pierce, Ah'Miyah Drewry, Kevin Pierce Jr., Kahmari Barrow, Aria Pierce, Carter Barrow, and Kaysen Barrow; five sisters, Helen Pierce of Hampton, VA., Harriet Ham(Gary) of Rochester, N.Y., Earline "Lu Lu" Carter(John) of Dendron, VA., Helena Pierce(David) of Smithfield, VA., and Nancy Overton of Dendron, VA.; three brothers, Harvey Pierce of VA Beach, VA., Robert "Cookie" Overton Jr. of GA, and Harry Pierce(Kathleen) of Covington, GA., an aunt, Willa Ramsey(Lamar) of Malverne, NY., a devoted nephew David Warren of Waverly, VA., a devoted niece Lisa Carter of Waverly, VA., and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be 1:00pm Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Empowerment Temple, 219 North County Drive, Waverly, Virginia, Elder Terrence Green Sr., Pastor, Bishop Marvin Drew Sr, of Lily of the Valley Deliverance Center, Waverly, Virginia,  Eulogist.  Interment will follow immediately at Waverly Cemetery, Spring Branch Road, Waverly, Virginia.

Please keep her family uplifted in prayer.
