Herbert Lee
Bailey Sr.
January 25, 1940 – February 8, 2023
On February 8, 2023, at Sentara Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, The Master called our beloved, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend home for eternal rest. Our family's patriarch, Herbert Lee Bailey Sr., was born on January 25, 1940, in Surry, Virginia to the late Pearl Bailey Robertson and Miles McDaniel.
Along with his wife Lora Mae, "Herb" as he was affectionately known, was welcomed into heaven by his son, Kenneth, daughter, Robin, and grandsons Terrance "Toby" Bailey, Kendale Shaw, and Terrance Ferebee. His siblings, Raymond and Dorothy Mae Robertson, stepfather, Finley Robertson, and grandmother, Mama Alice Young Bailey met him there.
"The Herb Man" was baptized and joined the Oak Grove Baptist Church, Wakefield. He served in several capacities to include Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Trustee Board, Male Chorus, Missionary Choir, First Senior Choir, First Senior Ushers, Hospitality Ministry, and the Missionary Circle. He was educated in the Surry County Public School system before stopping to work on the Whitmore Farm, also in Surry. He would continue his education with Sussex County Public Schools, gaining his GED in 1990. He began employment with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in 1962 where he served as an electrician. As a member of its Tiger Team, he traveled to places such as Florida, Hawaii, and Scotland, England. He retired in 2005 as a master shipbuilder after serving for 43 years.
Big Herb" was an energetic and knowledgeable servant to all. He never met a person that he did not know. He loved his family and everyone knew that the sun rose and set on his grandbabies. Whenever he was able, he was willing to assist anyone who was in need, whether it was physically or financially. He was well known for his punctuality. He would leave without you if you were not ready to go when he was. There was never a dull moment when he was around the house, and he did not believe in sparing the rod. He kept an immaculate garden and used it to feed his family and others in the community. His hobbies included watching baseball, completing crossword puzzles, visiting the sick, frequenting area food banks, and entertaining guests on his porch. He enjoyed harvest season. His house was full of love, laughter, and good times.
Herbert Sr. leaves to treasure his memories, his loving children, Valarie (Melvin), Wilbert (Nancy), Jacqueline, and Herbert, Jr (Carolyn); four special grandchildren that he raised as his own, Ja'Kitta, ShaQuita, Kiara, and Kenneth.
He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Donte' (Genise), Antwan, Edric (Cierra), Arkeisha, Erica, Telvin, and Damian; honorary grandchildren, Brea Davis (DeAndre') and Jaila Gay; 24 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Henry Robertson, Marilyn Bradshaw (Lloyd), Maybell Edmonds (John), Joyce Holmes (Dennis) and a dedicated sister, Ann Robertson; sister-in-law Dorothy Rae Gay; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends, among them devoted, Viola Brown, Paige Eley, and Judith Robinson. All who loved and knew him will definitely miss Daddy.
Public Viewing will be Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at Peace Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life will be 12Noon Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Wakefield, Virginia, Rev. Leslie Holloway, Pastor, Bishop Darren Gay, Eulogist.
