George J
Newsome
October 25, 1931 – May 16, 2020
George Junior Newsome was born in Waverly, Virginia on October 25, 1931. He left this life and entered eternity on Saturday May 16, 2020. He was the devoted son of Elizabeth Newsome and was raised in his early years by his Grandmother "Miss Missy" Jones and his Uncles Lacy and Eddie. George was an excellent athlete attending Sussex Training School where he played football and excelled at Baseball. George loved growing up in Waverly where he earned the nickname "Bozo" and became known as an excellent dancer. After graduation and a brief stint in the air force, he moved to New York to work and to be with his mother Elizabeth who had moved there to find work.
George soon to be nicked named "Jive Time" loved to have fun as he spent time running the streets of NY with his childhood friend from Waverly Jesse Lee Smith and soon to be lifelong friends Eddie "Rock" Robinson from Florida, Larry, and Leroy from New York. George loved New York. He prided himself on being from the country but quickly learned how to be street smart.
As fate would have it, Thelma "Puddin" Smith his childhood neighbor and the sister of his friend Jesse Lee Smith would soon move to New York. George would always laugh and say that she followed him to New York! He would always tell how he loved the way she wore her hair in "bangs". They were married on September 22, 1956, and had a beautiful service at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Brooklyn and had a fancy reception at the Moulin Rough Café on 128 street in Harlem.
In 1957 George and Thelma had their first son Gary Lamont Newsome and in 1961 their second son Michael Antoine Newsome was born. George was a hard worker and worked multiple jobs to support his young family. He worked as a janitor at WT Grant department store, and as a hospital worker in Bellevue Hospital where he worked his way up to become a union representative for DC 37. He even had a side hustle throwing parties with his friends in NY for a profit! The small apartment in Brooklyn soon became too small for the Newsome's so George and Thelma moved to Deer Park, Long Island. Thelma worked as a nurse's aide at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn and George continued to move up the ranks as a Union representative.
George was passionate about life and loved helping people. George instilled in his sons the value of hard work and knowing good people was a winning combination. George would often say "I may not know the answer…but I know someone who does "
George's favorite sayings:
He was preceded in death by his beloved Mother Elizabeth, and to cherish his memory is his beloved wife Thelma, sons Gary (Amanda), Michael (Patricia), Granddaughter Taryn, Grandsons Aaron, and Jayson and Great Grandsons Tyler and Timothy and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
George Newsome was a special man and lived an amazing life. He loved people, created lifelong friendships, and endeared himself to everyone who knew him.
