Obituary

Reverend Freddie Hines, age 91, entered into eternal rest at his home on June 17, 2022. He was a native of Littleton VA, in Sussex County, and was born on April 27, 1931, to the late William (Billie) and Virginia Mason Hines who preceded him in death.

He worked for many years as a farmer in Sussex County. After retiring from farming, he had jobs in construction/plumbing and hotel maintenance. He was also a licensed and bonded electrician.

Reverend Freddie accepted Christ at an early age. He served as a Sunday School and Bible Study teacher and Superintendent of the Sunday School Union. For a number of years, he sang with the Senior Choir and the Combined Voices of Zion.

As a young man, he was a member of and sang with the Morning Star Quartet for 9 years. A quartet music group that traveled to local venues and churches singing the gospel.

He served as Pastor at Holland Mission United Church of Christ, Holland, VA until his retirement after 34 years.

After retiring, he served as Assistant Pastor at Union Hill United Church of Christ.

He was a dedicated member of the George H. Danby/Waverly Lodge #70 for over 60 years. He was the PM and served as chaplain until his health declined.

He was married to Leona Mason Hines for 65 years, who preceded him in death.

He was also preceded by brothers, Billie Hines and John Hines.

He leaves to cherish his memory, a devoted daughter Sharon Duncan and a son-in-law, Jay of Fords, NJ, and Karen Edwards (Rufus) of Newport News, VA.

He considered the following nieces and nephews to be like his own daughters and sons: Berndine Shepperson (Johnnie) of Midlothian, VA, Katherine Singleton (Samuel) of Chesterfield, VA, Belinda Timmons of Midlothian, VA, Marjorie Leon of College Park, GA, Diana Manchurian (Robert) of Ellenwood GA, Barbara Velez (Humberto) of Conyers, GA, Larry Hines (Donna) of San Antonio, TX,  John Hines (Karin) of Bel Air, MD; Godson, Moses Jones of Waverly, VA. There are numerous nieces, nephews, grands, cousins, family, and friends left to mourn his passing.  Two devoted friends: Geneva Monroe, who was also a caregiver, and Tony Perkins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Central High School Auditorium, 21394 Sussex Drive, Sussex, VA 23884 with the Rev. Eula Marshall Banks officiating. Interment will be in the Union Hill UCC Church cemetery.

Public Viewing will be Noon - 5:00pm Friday, June 24, 2022, and Noon - 6:00pm Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Peace Funeral Home, 237 Railroad Avenue Waverly, VA.
