Obituary

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

Joshua 1:9

First Sergeant Ferman A. Turner, Sr. US Army (Ret.), transitioned from labor to rest on Saturday, December 23, 2023, in Waverly, Virginia. He was born on August 10, 1954, to Late Fenton Turner Sr. and Mary Alma Mason. He was reared in Waverly, VA, and educated in Sussex County, Virginia. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized early in life.

First Sergeant Ferman A. Turner, Sr. embarked on a journey that changed his life forever when he enlisted in the United States Army in 1972 for approximately 24 years of continuous active service culminating in his honorable retirement as First Sergeant. His tenure as a Laundry and Bath Specialist, his experiences as a Vietnam and Persian Gulf War Veteran, and his involvement in several other overseas operations are testaments to his unwavering commitment. Even after retirement, his dedication was persistent; he joined the Department of Defense, Facilities Service Department, earning a second retirement. His numerous awards, accommodations, and decorations bear witness to his earthly career.

Outside of his professional life, Ferman Sr. was known for his industrious nature and love for fishing. As the owner and operator of Turner Custodian Service, he revealed the challenge of making a floor shine to perfection. His long-lasting work relations with Fort Lee Federal Credit Union were a testament to his dedication. Ferman Sr. also generously volunteered his time and services to clean church floors. When he wasn't working, he found peace in fishing, his personal sanctuary.

In the wisdom and providence of the almighty God, the death angel came on December 23, 2023, and took into his sacred garden Ferman Alexander Turner Sr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fenton Turner Sr., Mary Alma Mason, and Mother Grace Turner, and sisters, Mary Brooks and Dorothy Thomas.

Our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Ferman Sr., leaves cherishing his memories his beloved son, Ferman A. Turner Jr., of Waverly, VA;  beloved grandson, Airman First Class Nazir A. Turner of Dyess Air Force Base; granddaughter, Jhadae Drew of Waverly, VA; two brothers, Minister Fenton Turner, III, (Pearl) of Waverly, VA and  Eddie Turner (Beverly) of Waco, TX; one sister, Barbara Clanton (Ivory); loyal niece, Angela Person, special uncle Leon Brooks, devoted friends, Tinasha Winfield and Emma Taylor and particularly Miriam Turner Edwards (Dee) all of Waverly, VA, and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and great friends.
