Obituary

Felix Lucas Llanos was born on October 18, 1941, in Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, to Felix Llanos de Rivera and Eulogia Amada "Linda" Encarnación de Llanos. Felix is the second of 4 boys and has always shared a tight bond with his brothers Luis, Rafael†, and Ignacio "Man-D".

Felix graduated in 1959 from St. Mary's High School and immediately entered the workforce. He worked in the banking industry for 10 years, starting in 1960 at Chase Manhattan Bank, through 1965, where he met his future wife, Cleone R. Williams. He then moved on to Bank of America as an Operations Manager until 1970. Following, he spent two years at Masonry Products as the Office Manager at their Aggregate Plant in Grove Place. He spent the next 12 years working for industrial companies, beginning for a short time at Hess Oil, and then as an Associate Maintenance Engineer with Martin Marietta. At the closing of Martin Marietta, Felix moved on to work for United Shopping Plaza as an Administrator for 18 months before entering the local government in 1987 under Governor Farrelly's Administration. He served in various roles at the Department of Property & Procurement until he retired in 2009, as the Coordinator of Transportation, Motor Pool Operations.

Felix was a family man and loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grands very deeply. He was extremely close to his brothers, who were his best friends, had several cousins and long-time friends who were more like brothers, and loved all his nieces and nephews like they were his own children. Felix was a founding member of the 1927 Family Sports Club, a group of Encarnacion cousins who pulled together to continue the legacy of the love and togetherness learned from their parents and grandparents. This club originally banded together to host baseball games and evolved into planning family gatherings at Tio Monche's home and church services at Holy Cross. Felix was always on the finance committee, up through Reunion 2012, but was also instrumental in pulling together the events of Reunion 2017, especially in securing sponsorship for the booklet. He was passionate about keeping the family together and binding the progeny of Don Evaristo Encarnacion and Dona Marcelina Encarnacion as "Una Familia" - one family. He was a kind, gentle, compassionate, loving, comedic man who just loved people. He never met a stranger and brought smiles and laughter to everyone he encountered.

In addition to telling jokes, Felix loved talking about God and politics. What a combination! He was a lifelong Democrat and became particularly active during the Farrelly Administration, including campaigning for Farrelly-Hodge and the Hodge-Heath ticket. He served as a poll watcher and arranged transportation for various government entities, including the Election Systems.

Felix professed his faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior and loved talking about God and the bible. He was very concerned that many are living without acknowledging God and professing faith in Him. He walked in the precepts of the Word of God as he exemplified the love, peace, and forgiveness of Christ.

At 13 years old, Felix's love for music began when his father bought a guitar for him and his 3 brothers. In 1955, at the age of 14, he joined the Watergonian Steel Band, playing a lead pan. Following that, in 1957, Felix served as the Captain of the Moonshiners Band and arranged for them to be the first steel band to visit Vieques, Puerto Rico, for their annual Patronales festival. In 1959, the Moonshiners became the champions of the St. Croix Christmas Festival.

Felix's love for the saxophone began when his youngest brother, Mandy, who played the instrument in his school band, taught Felix the basics. Felix then purchased his own saxophone, and the rest is history!

1n 1966, a steel band by the name of Booth Hill was formed from various members of other bands to commemorate the Bicentennial of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Felix played an instrumental part as one of the pan-tuners of the 50-member band for this momentous occasion.

In 1972, the Five Notes band was formed with 5 original members: Carlos "Carlito" Encarnacion (bass), Jose' Pedro Encarnacion (guitar), Charles "Mac" McAlpin† (keyboard), Rodolfo "Rudy" Encarnacion (drums), and Felix (saxophone). This band was strictly instrumental until two years later, when Carl Christiansen joined the band as the lead singer, with several members of the band doing backup vocals. Throughout the years, there were several changes in band members, to include Luis Encarnacion† (guitar), Bobby Jacobs† (congas), Julio Rijos (drums), and Juan "Ronnie" Felix (vocals/bass). In 1978, the band released an album, Guavaberry Christmas, which was very successful, with approximately 8000 copies sold throughout the years. In 1985, The Five Notes took a break, but unfortunately, never re-formed.

From 1987-1990, Felix played with Lennox Owens and Conrad Gore in a 3-man band called Nature. A few years later, three members of the Five Notes Band - Felix, Carlos, and Carl, regrouped and formed a new band, Fourever Yours, to include Ginelle, Carlos' daughter, who joined the group as a singer and guitarist. The group released a few CDs, arranged and produced by Carlos/CJ Studios. As Ginelle moved on to pursue other ventures, Ronnie Felix joined the group, and with his help, Fourever Yours released a few more CDs. Some years later, Carl Christensen decided to retire, and the band was renamed Forever Yours. After Forever Yours disbanded, Felix was kept busy for a few more years as he was in high demand for solo appearances.

Felix married the former Cleone R. Williams on November 15, 1964, and from this union came four children: Maria Teresa, "Terry" (Spouse: Eugene), Laura Denise, "Dee Dee," Lizette Alicia, "Liz" (Spouse: Popo), and Felix Andre, "Andy." Felix and Cleone are also blessed with 5 grandchildren: Ronald, Cassandra, Israel, Caleb, and Ta'Liyah; and 4 great-grandchildren: Antonio, Amaya, Aaron, and Jayden.

Not surprisingly, Felix has left an indelible mark on many people, and his musical legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, most of whom play an instrument, and/or sing. Felix loved his family, friends, and community deeply and was always grateful for their love and support throughout his amazing journey of life.
