Evelyn Sylvester, 112 N. Beaverdam Road, Waverly, Virginia, departed this life on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at VCU Medical Center Critical Care Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. Evelyn was born on April 12, 1928 to the late Bennie H. Sylvester and Lelia Howard Sylvester. She is preceded in death by her sister, Louveller Sylvester, her brother Joe Sylvester, and former husband, Orceal Luster.

Evelyn graduated from the Sussex County Public School, formerly the Sussex County Training School. She thoroughly enjoyed reading and studying the Bible. As a young person she confessed her belief in the Lord Jesus Christ and joined First Baptist Church, Waverly. During more than seventy years as a member of First Baptist Church, Waverly she was a member of the Sanctuary Choir as a young adult and later became a Sunday school teacher. As a devout supporter of Sunday school, she enjoyed discussing the lesson with the members of the Adult Bible Class and attending the Sussex County Sunday School Union.

She worked as a waitress at Hick's Store in Waverly before becoming a laundry checker at a local business in Petersburg. The majority of her work life was spent as a custodial worker at the Colonial Heights Middle School for twenty-five years.

She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted daughter, Louveller Luster of Waverly, Virginia and a host of loving family members and friends.

The family extends special thanks to doctors, nurses, and medical support staff at VCU Medical Center Critical Care Hospital and the VCU Health Medical Center, Richmond, Virginia.

A Homegoing Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at First Baptist Church, 315 South Church Street, Waverly, VA, with the eulogy delivered by Rev. Dr. Bridget Wilson, Pastor. The interment is to follow at the First Baptist Church Cemetery.

Honorary and active pallbearers are asked to assemble at 1:30 p.m. at the church.  The family will assemble at 1:00 p.m. the day of the service and receive friends at 112 N. Beaverdam Road, Waverly, Virginia and may be contacted by calling (804) 834-8084.
