Mrs. Evelyn T. Sumler, daughter of the late Lloyd Turner Sr, and Louise Urquhart Diggs were born September 8, 1944, in Suffolk, Virginia. She entered her eternal rest on Wednesday, September 1, 2021.
She was preceded in death by both parents, her daughter Sabrina Drake, four brothers, Glen Turner, Daniel Smith, James Smith, and Robert Brown; and one grandson Montrail Stringfield.
Evelyn Graduate from Sussex Central High School Class of 1962. she worked at the Tasty Treat in Wakefield, Va for 20 years and later moved on with her career to become a secretary at Purviance Funeral Home win which she was a loyal employee for 20 years. She also provided housekeeping services for serval families.
She was a hard-working woman that made sure her family was well taken care of. She was a former Eastern Star Member until her health began to decline and the Vice President of Senior Citizens of Sussex County VA.
Evelyn leaves to cherish her memories, her husband Antinie "Peter" Sumler Jr of 58 years. From this union there were three daughters, Sabrina L. Drake(Deceased), Towando Tonkins (Kenneth) and Regina Drew both of Wakefield, VA; three sons, Charles Sumler of Wakefield, VA, Antinie "Ant" Sumler III of Courtland, and Stephen T, Sumler of Wakefield and an adopted daughter Joyce Hawkins (Edward) of Suffolk, VA. Evelyn had nine grandchildren, LaShonda Price, Donterrell Sumler, Montrail Stringfield (deceased), Ellyssia Drew, Michael "Spike" Price Jr, her Brisha Sumler, Kiawanna Drew, Eric Stith Jr, and Haven Purviance. Evelyn also had twenty-two great-grandchildren in which she loved and spoiled dearly including two devoted Ziyanni Price and Noah Jones. She also leaves six brothers, LLoyd Turner Jr of Norfolk, Willie Turner (Shirley) of Waverly, Benjamin Howard (Betty) of Portsmouth, John W. Turner (Betty) of Disputanta, Raymond Turner (Deborah) of Petersburg, and Dwight Seward of Wakefield; three sisters, Virginia Powell (Larry) of Virginia Beach, Delorise Taylor of Wakefield and Renea Jeters of Hampton; three sisters-in-law, Rosa Lee Sumler of Norfolk, Mary Moore of Baltimore, MD, and Ada Mae Sumler of Wakefield and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Evelyn made friends wherever she went, but throughout the years there were a few that stuck by and became family, those devoted friends were Sam Purviance, Betty Jo Gay, Kathy M. Frierson, Peggy J. Moore, and Steve Jones. A Special thanks to the Staff ICU staff at Sentara Obici and the 4th Floor at Riverside Regional Medical Center Specialty Select Unit.
A Celebration of Life will be 1:00pm Thursday, September 9. 2021, Wakefield, VA
