Deacon Leroy
Pierce
July 20, 1942 – January 22, 2025
Leroy was born July 20, 1942, to the late John Walter and Emily Louise Pierce, in Aberdeen Gardens at 67 Mary Peake Blvd. Hampton, Virginia. He peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on January 22, 2025, at his home in Waverly, Virginia.
Leroy graduated from George P Phenix School in 1962, where he and some of his friends had a singing group. In his younger years, Leroy enjoyed working on and driving fast cars. Leroy began his career at Newport News Shipyard as a handyman. After 45 years of service, he retired as a Nuclear Auditor. After retirement, Leroy worked in the transportation department of Sussex County Public Schools for 11 years. He enjoyed interacting with the people he worked with and the children he drove to school.
Leroy was a long-standing member of Liberty Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school, sang in the Male Chorus, and Senior Choir, served on the Usher Board and Deacon Ministry for over 30 years. He was the co-chair of the Community Mass Male Chorus of Sussex County and Vicinity. You could always find Leroy lending a helping hand to anyone in need.
Leroy was a devoted husband to his wife, Mae J Pierce of 52 ½ years. He was an amazing father to five children: Leroy Jr (Victoria) of Newport News, Virginia, Craig Pierce of Colorado, Devonia Nixon of Sussex, Virginia, Rachelle Pierce of Wilson, North Carolina and Dwayne Pierce of Arlington, Virginia. He also leaves behind one brother Thomas Pierce (Pauline) of Surry County, Virginia, 11 grandkids and 12 great grands, Brother-in-law Robert Johnson (Marion), Sister-in-Laws Teresa King (Lloyd) who he adored and Janice Johnson (Nathaniel –deceased), Aunt in law Shirley Williams (Charles). He also leaves to cherish a host of cousins, nieces and nephews whohe loved and enjoyed spending time with. He also leaves behind several devoted friends who he cherished and loved.
Leroy never met a stranger; he was a friend to all. To know him was to love him. He always had a way of making people feel special and important to him. This can be proven by the many people he considered his extended family. He had a jovial personality that was contagious. If he couldn't make you laugh, he didn't want to see you cry.
Leroy's favorite hobbies were singing, attending the drag strip, fishing, and in his younger years working on fast cars and driving them. Leroy was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. Leroy enjoyed talking and cutting up and keeping something going with his family and friends, whether outside around the grill with his children or huddled up after church with who he called his favorite jigs; William "Buck" Ricks and Ronnell "Stew" Urquhart and his brother-in-law, Billy Buck. If you knew him, you know there was never a dull moment.
