Obituary

Deacon Samuel Lewis Jones Sr., "Brewster," departed his life on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at a favored age of 90. He was born on Oct. 15, 1922, in Waverly, to the proud parents of the late Reverend Alexander and Ida M. Jones.

Deacon Samuel Lewis Jones Sr. was married to the late Ida G. (Crocker) Jones. He received his education at Sussex County Training School. Deacon Jones served in the United States Navy, during World War II. He was employed by Gray Lumber Company for many years until retirement, and he was a great diesel mechanic specialist.

He served as chairman of the deacon's board and senior trustee at Zion Hill Holiness Church where he accepted Christ. Deacon Jones loved everybody, those that he knew, as well as those that he didn't know. He was a man that would never say "no," and was always giving!

He loved to play his guitar (Lucille), and to sing at churches in the surrounding area. Deacon Jones was well known for his song, "The Train," and was the founder of Sam Jones and the Harmoneers of Waverly.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Ida G. Jones; brother, Herman Jones; sister, Grace Turner; and son, Clinton Jones.

He leaves to cherish his distinguished memories: nine children, four daughters, Evangelist Joan Wyche (John) of Waverly, Evangelist Alice Givens, Evangelist Jean Reynolds and Lenora McQueen, all of Washington, five sons, Samuel Jones Jr., Elder Ernest Jones (Netra), Vernard Jones (Queen), Moses Jones (Robin), all of Waverly, and James Clary (Elonda) of Surry; one sister, Evangelist Bernice Holmes of Surry; 30 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two devoted friends, Dorothy Ricks and James (Ricky) Thomas; and a host of other relatives; and friends. He will be truly be missed by all!

A wake for Deacon Jones will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at Zion Hill Church, Waverly. Family and friends will assemble at 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Zion Hill Church on the day of the service.

Service for Deacon Jones will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Sussex Central High School, Sussex, the Rev. Williams officiating. Interment to follow in the Zion Hill Church Cemetery, Waverly.
