Cloyd Donnal (Donnie) Cottemond of Petersburg, died February 26, 2015, at Southside Regional Medical Center surrounded by his wife, Thelma H. Cottemond of 48 years and his nephew, Fred Cottemond.
Cloyd was born on January 12, 1947, to the late William and Thelia Cottemond. He was raised in Surry County, Virginia, and was educated in Surry County Public Schools. Cloyd joined the United States Army in 1969 and served until his retirement in 1980. During his military career he served in Korea and did two tours of duty in Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Hattie C. Cypress; and his brothers, William Edward Jr. and Roy Cottemond.
He married Thelma Hamlin in 1966 and to this union was born one daughter, Sharon Cottemond Williams. He thoroughly enjoyed hunting fishing. He also enjoyed vacationing with his family. The greatest joys of his life included his wife, daughter, granddaughter, grandson and his four great-grandchildren.
Cloyd worked as a long distance truck driver for over 20 years. His combined military service and trucking career lasted over 40 years, until his health began to fail.
He is survived by his loving wife, Thelma; one daughter; one granddaughter; one grandson; four great-grandchildren; three sisters; one mother-in-law; four brother-in-laws; four sister-in-laws; and a host of nephew, nieces, cousins, friends and neighbors.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to McGuire Veterans Hospital, Southside Regional Medical Center and Home Health Care.
Viewing for Mr. Cottemond will be Friday, March 6, 2015, followed by wake from 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Zion Apostolic Christian Memorial Temple, 1601 S. Youngs Road, Petersburg, Virginia. The Interment will be on Monday, March 9, 2015, at Albert G. Horton Jr Memorial Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, Virginia 23434.
