Carlton Artis, Jr. entered eternal rest at his home in Waverly, Va., on Wednesday, December 30, 2015. He was the seventh of ten children born to the late Carlton Artis, Sr. and Sallie Novella Artis. He was born February 15, 1954. Carlton received his education in the Sussex County Public School System.
Carlton gave his life to Christ at an early age and united with Ebenezer Baptist Church in Ivor, Va. He later joined First Baptist Church in Waverly, Va.
Carlton was known for his big smile, his love of gardening, fishing, landscaping, racing cars, grilling, cooking and driving trucks. He started driving trucks at the age of 18; and during his driving career he was employed by Ronnie Goodrich Trucking, Food Lion Distribution Center, and Van Cleef Trucking. He worked as a mechanic and driver for Van Cleef Trucking until his health failed.
His parents, Carlton and Sallie Artis; brother, Raymond Artis; and sister, Mary Artis-Cole, preceded Carlton in death.
He is survived by his wife of forty years, Bobbie Artis; one daughter, Tammy Artis-Stith (Robert), one step daughter, Lisa Pulley (Kirk); five sisters, Gracie Burwell, Virginia Couch (Walgus), June Melton, Carolyn Ridley; and Gloria Artis; two brothers, Wayne Artis (Sandra) and Kenneth Artis (Patricia); one sister-in-law, Deborah Artis; four grandchildren, Tiara Artis, Alonzo Scott, Jr., Alexus Scott and Ryan Stith; two step grandchildren, Jerrica Stringfield and Keshawn Allen; one uncle, Lawrence Faltz; two aunts, Mary Stringfield (James) and Inez Faltz; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. We love you and will miss you!
Funeral service for Mr. Artis will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 7, 2016, at First Baptist Church, 315 Church Street, Waverly, Va., Rev. Ronald Taylor, pastor, and Rev Carlos Jordan, officiating and eulogizing. Interment will follow immediately at Waverly Cemetery.
