Obituary

On Friday, December 6, 2013 our loving father and grandfather, Carey Deloyd Gray closed his eyes and fell into an eternal sleep in Parkville, Maryland.

Carey Deloyd Gray, the son of the late Bertha Gray and Bennie Gray, was born in Southampton County, Virginia on March 20, 1952.

At an early age, he was baptized and became a member of Union Hill Christian Church, which is now called Union Hill United Church of Christ. He attended Sussex Central High School in Sussex, Virginia. After graduating from high school he entered the United States Army at the age of 17. After his deployment to Vietnam, he returned and relocated to Maryland where he married Cynthia Hill. Together they had a son, Carey Gray Jr. After a number of years, he married Angela Gaynor and from that union they had two daughters, Caresse D. Gray and Carrah D. Gray and a stepson David J. Gaynor. He continued to serve in the U.S. Army for 19 years. After his honorable service, Carey chose a career with the United States Coast Guard as a logistics specialist. He continued his service until his retirement. Carey D. Gray served his country for a total of 28 years.

Carey was a loving father and grandfather. He was known as being a jokester, who was always laughing and making others laugh. His smile could brighten an entire room (with or without his teeth). Our father loved to go fishing and he always bragged about "the one that got away". He liked to make trips back to Virginia to visit family and friends. This made him truly happy. He was never afraid or embarrassed to show his feelings and emotions. He loved everyone and he would often express those feelings to his family and friends. Most of all, he loved his children and grandchildren. He was extremely proud of them and made sure that others knew about them. Carey will be missed, but never ever forgotten.

He leaves to cherish his memories: a son, Carey D. Gray Jr. of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; two daughters, Caresse D. Eskridge (Marcus Eskridge) of Glen Burnie, Maryland; Carrah D. Walker (Rico Walker) of Culpeper, Virginia; four grandchildren, LaSante L. King, Keyara D. Morgan, Nia I. Eskridge and Treyvon P. Morgan; two sisters, Iola L. Powell and Bernice V. Crocker both of Bronx, New York; three brothers, James O. Gray of Petersburg, Virginia, Anthony T. Gray of Wakefield, Virginia and Oscar L. Gray of Prince George, Virginia; a sister-in-law Sarah Gray of Petersburg, Virginia; two brother-in-laws, Lloyd Powell and William Crocker both of Bronx, New York; his close companion of several years, Ms. Evelyn Bell and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
